D . C . Uncertainty , Risk , and Incentives : Theory and Evidence

چکیده
Uncertainty has qualitatively different implications than risk in studying executive incentives. We study the interplay between profitability uncertainty and moral hazard, where profitability is multiplicative with managerial effort. Investors who face greater uncertainty desire faster learning, and consequently offer higher managerial incentives to induce higher effort from the manager. In contrast to the standard negative risk-incentive trade-off, this “learning-bydoing” effect generates a positive relation between profitability uncertainty and incentives. We document empirical support for this prediction.

Ambiguity Theory and Asset Pricing: Empirical Evidence from Tehran Stock Exchange
Modern portfolio theory is based on the relationship between risk and return and in this paper, specific uncertainty conditions are introduced as ambiguity which affects the asset pricing. Also, the relationship between risk, ambiguity and return is examined. First, ambiguity is estimated by the means of three-variable and main component method, trading volume, ask-bid spread, error of earnings...
متن کاملTackling uncertainty in safety risk analysis in process systems: The case of gas pressure reduction stations
Industrial plants are subjected to very dangerous events. Therefore, it is very essential to carry out an efficient risk and safety analysis. In classical applications, risk analysis treats event probabilities as certain data, while there is much penurious knowledge and uncertainty in generic failure data that will lead to biased and inconsistent alternative estimates. Then, in order to achieve...
متن کاملCEO Risk-Taking Incentives based on Environmental Sustainability
In this study, I try to examine the effect of environmental sustainability on CEO risk taking. Prior research, however, has struggled to establish this relation empirically; moreover, some evidence points to the possibility that the CEO risk appetite is lower for firms with sustainable environment. The opportunistic approach of managers leads to decisions about personal interests and imposing c...
متن کاملQuantitative evaluation of software security: an approach based on UML/SecAM and evidence theory
Quantitative and model-based prediction of security in the architecture design stage facilitates early detection of design faults hence reducing modification costs in subsequent stages of software life cycle. However, an important question arises with respect to the accuracy of input parameters. In practice, security parameters can rarely be estimated accurately due to the lack of sufficient kn...
متن کاملRisk-incentives trade-off and outside options∗
Despite the prominence of the risk-incentives trade-off in the agency theory, empirical evidence provides at best a mixed result. In this paper, we argue that these mixed results may be attributed to the heterogeneity of risk aversion magnitude among the agents and the outside options available on the market. We show that when an increase of the uncertainty amplifies the riskiness of principal’...
